Shop-Built Tank Fabrication: High Quality API 650 Tanks

Shop-built tanks are a proven solution for industrial storage where quality control, transport efficiency, and schedule certainty matter.

T BAILEY LLC has been fabricating shop-built tanks since 1991, delivering custom steel tank fabrication from our facility in Anacortes, Washington. All phases of tank manufacturing are completed in-house, including fabrication, blasting, coating, testing, and delivery, giving clients a single, accountable partner from initial design through final shipment.

Our shop-built tanks are fabricated from carbon steel and stainless steel to meet a range of codes and industry standards, including API 650, AWWA D100, ASME Section VIII, and UL 142. We produce single- and double-walled tanks over 100 feet long and 20 feet in diameter, serving sectors including oil and gas, water and wastewater, chemical storage, fuel, marine, and infrastructure.

Whether your project requires a standard storage vessel or a complex custom tank fabrication, T BAILEY LLC has the steel fabrication services and certifications to deliver. For projects that exceed shop-transportable dimensions, we also offer field-erected tanks through our construction division.

Design and Engineering

T BAILEY LLC provides in-house design and engineering as part of our custom tank fabrication and tank manufacturing process. Starting with preliminary planning and conceptual design, our engineering team develops performance and strength calculations, cost recommendations, and detailed CAD models tailored to your project requirements and budget. This integrated approach means the design moves directly into fabrication without handoffs to outside firms, reducing lead time and keeping the project on a single quality standard from start to finish.

Steel Tank Fabricating Process

Once engineering is complete, the design moves to our fabrication division. As an experienced tank fabricator and tank builder, T BAILEY LLC follows a controlled, step-by-step production sequence:

  1. Cut and etch a steel plate using CNC plasma cutters
  2. Bevel weld seams as needed for quality joint preparation
  3. Roll the plate into cylinders through the rolling machines
  4. Weld the longitudinal seam of each cylinder
  5. Join cylinders and weld one head to form the tank shell
  6. Attach the final head using single or tandem head welding manipulators
  7. Install nozzles, hardware, lifting devices, and structural supports as required
  8. Fabricate and attach platforms, ladders, and accessories if needed
  9. Forward the completed tank to testing and quality control
  10. Complete all painting and coating requirements before shipment

Each step is managed by experienced fabrication personnel and monitored under T BAILEY LLC’s Quality Management System to maintain consistency and traceability throughout production.

Testing and Quality Control

Every shop-built tank produced by T BAILEY LLC must pass rigorous testing before it is cleared for shipment. Our Director of Quality Assurance, a CWB Certified Welding Supervisor and AWS Certified Welding Inspector, oversees a comprehensive testing program designed to verify structural integrity, coating performance, and code compliance. As an established steel tank fabricator, T BAILEY LLC performs the following tests in-house:

  • Visual inspection and step-by-step process monitoring
  • Radiographic Testing (RT)
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
  • Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
  • Heat treating and stress relieving
  • Hardness and impact testing
  • Positive Material Identification (PMI)
  • Leak testing
  • Hydrostatic testing, up to 2,500 psig [CONFIRM: Item #3]
  • Soluble salt testing
  • Full blast and lining profile measurement
  • Dry film thickness (DFT) testing
  • Adhesion testing
  • Lining continuity (holiday) testing
  • Environmental monitoring and reporting

This level of in-house testing capability means that among regional tank fabricators, T BAILEY LLC can validate structural integrity, coating performance, and code compliance without relying on third-party inspection services.

AISC Painting and Blasting for Shop-Built Tanks

T BAILEY LLC operates an AISC-certified industrial coating division within the same facility as our fabrication team. This integrated approach to industrial tank fabrication eliminates the cost and schedule impact of transporting tanks to a separate coating contractor. Our coating team begins surface preparation in the early stages of fabrication and continues through completion, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance. Services include:

  • Prewashing steel to remove contaminants, soluble salt, and oil per SSPC SP1
  • Machine or manual blasting to prepare the surface for coating
  • Metallizing with aluminum or zinc
  • Priming and finishing with epoxies, urethanes, zinc, enamels, and vinyl ester coatings

By integrating blasting and coating within our fabrication facility, T BAILEY LLC maintains tighter control over surface preparation, coating application, and long-term corrosion performance.
