A fire water tank is an aboveground steel vessel that stores a dedicated water supply for fire suppression, feeding sprinkler systems, deluge systems, hydrants, and fire pumps, with the reserve sized to the hazard it protects. Because that water can sit for long periods and then be called on without warning, a fire protection water storage tank is lined to resist corrosion at the vapor space and the tank floor, the two zones where standing-water tanks corrode first.

Most large fire protection tanks are either reservoirs or standpipes, and both use elevation and gravity to deliver pressure. A reservoir works where the tank can sit uphill from the area it serves. T BAILEY LLC builds fire protection water tanks from small standby units of a few hundred gallons up to reservoirs holding millions of gallons. How a tank is built depends mainly on its diameter.

Fire water storage tanks under roughly 15 feet in diameter are fabricated, assembled, and coated in our shop, then delivered to the job site as finished units. Larger welded steel standpipes and reservoirs are erected on site by our field crews and run from about 15 feet in diameter to well over 250 feet, with heights from 16 feet to more than 140 feet. Fabricating the components in the shop and assembling them on site keeps quality consistent on tanks too large to ship whole. This is core industrial tank fabrication work, and it is what our facility is built for.

We fabricate most fire water tanks from carbon or stainless steel, with the grade selected to match the specification and the service. When your project requires an alternate material or a nonstandard design, we can provide suggestions on the right choice for the application.

Codes and Standards for Fire Water Tanks

We fabricate fire suppression tanks to NFPA 22, the Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection, the code most fire protection systems are specified against. We also build to AWWA D100 for welded carbon steel water tanks and coat to AWWA D102 for steel water storage tanks, meeting the fabrication, welding, testing, and foundation requirements inspectors check.

Applying the coating in our own shop tightens the schedule. The tank never leaves our campus for an outside coater, which removes transit between fabrication and coating, the handling damage transit invites, and the wait in a third-party queue. One quality program covers surface preparation through the final coat, applied under controlled indoor conditions rather than weather-dependent outdoor scheduling, which keeps a fire water tank on schedule.
